According to the Environmental Protection Department of HKSAR government, the air quality in Hong Kong has improved significantly, with local emission reduction measures and deepened regional cooperation with Guangdong over the past years.

The two governments had worked out the emission reduction targets for four major air pollutants in 2015 and 2020, including sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, respirable suspended particles and volatile organic compounds, all of which have met the expected standard.

According to a spokesman of the Environmental Protection Department, in the past two decades, annual average concentration of the above air pollutants in the atmosphere has been drastically reduced from the highest level by about 40 to 80%.

By now, the HKSAR government has issued eight technical memorandums for regulating air pollutants emissions, and the latest edition will take effect with new emission limitation commencing January 1st, 2026.

It is regarded as an important move to further reduce air pollutant emissions from power plants from 2026, that will improve air quality in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong.
